On 23 March 2026, Maarten Manse, Hans Hägerdal, and Santy Kouwagam will present a joint paper at the Oxford conference Legal History in Asia and Beyond: Lessons from the Past for the Present. The conference brings together scholars examining how historical legal practices in Asia inform present-day legal and institutional frameworks.

Their paper, “A layered legal lexicon: tracing the historical performative power of Dutch legal-administrative formulas in Indonesia,” explores how colonial legal language shaped administrative authority and legal culture in Indonesia.
